Healing Grief Through Spiritual Mediumship
By Keith Zang MME, BS, RC, RM, CHSRS
The loss of a loved one can be emotionally devastating. This is particularly true when one's beliefs tend towards separation of the spirit from worldly matters, the soul sleeping until the return of a messiah or the cessation of consciousness upon physical death. Not knowing if their loved one still exists, or even worse, existing in some concept of hell, can create emotional turmoil that can greatly upset the balance of a person’s life. This emotional turmoil can manifest into physical and psychological ailments that start out minor, but over time can become debilitating.
A powerful tool that can ease grief and turmoil is to create a connection to the person that has crossed over into spirit. Through mediumship this connection can bring knowledge and comfort where before was sadness and uncertainty. The bonds of love are not severed at physical death. Those involved are merely separated by different vibrational states of being. Connection can be reestablished through alignment of vibrational energy patterns much like radio waves are synchronized to a receiver or television converts a signal to images and sound.
Most people’s first experience of spirit communication is often initiated through a spiritual medium. There is no special training needed, nor much of an understanding required by using a professional to make this connection and relay messages from those that desire to channel messages. This is where many people tend to stay in their development and understanding of metaphysical ideas and principles that make it possible to make the connection in the first place.
A much deeper and lasting approach to the issue of understanding the nature of physical death and spiritual rebirth is through study of intuitive awareness and mediumship. There are many different schools and individuals that teach these skills. There are thousands of books that have been written through the ages and especially most recently that can help teach the individual and bring awareness that this earth and physical existence on it are only one small aspect of universal reality. Even minimal study and effort for most people will yield astounding results that will help in breaking the barriers between this physical world, and the many other realms that exist around it.
The first experience I had with connecting to the spirit world was right after my Reiki 1 attunement in 1998. My Reiki teacher, Randy Shaw, gave me a guided meditation that he created to facilitate contact with spirit guides. The evening before my attunement I listened to it and was soon relaxed by the music and words that emanated out of the tape deck. At one point in the meditation, the listener is guided to open a door to a room. When I mentally did so, the room was empty. I walked into the room and standing before me was Rod Serling, the creator of The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery. He had a quirky smile on his face as he held out his hand for me to shake it. I did so and he promptly disappeared, leaving me alone in the room. I waited for several more minutes hoping more would happen, but the room remained empty. I roused myself from the meditative state I was in, feeling disappointed that nothing more had happened. I attributed the appearance of Rod Serling as a product of my own mind. The reference was too strong to miss, he was saying “Welcome to the Twilight Zone.” I laughed to myself and decided I would try it again the next day after my Reiki 1 attunement.
The next day my whole body was buzzing with energy and I had gone through a basic change in my vibrational energies due to the Reiki 1 attunement I had just received. After I was alone that evening I put the tape into the machine again and turned it on. Within several minutes I felt a strong presence around me at the same time I began to see green smoky energy forming behind my eyes. I first thought it was my imagination but the feeling became very strong and the shifting energies began to take form. The outlines of faces began to solidify, each one becoming clear, then dissipating. In all, there were about 12 that came forward. At the end of this display, I received a very strong message that these were my spirit guides letting themselves be known to me. As their presence waned, I bolted up to a sitting position very excited, my heart and mind racing with the implications. I had connected to my spirit guides!! At that moment I truly knew there was a deeper reality than the one I had existed in for the last 35 years. This opened many doors for me. When Rod Serling stood in front of me and shook my hand, he really was welcoming me into the Twilight Zone!
As my knowledge and skills grew, my healing also took place on a deep level. I was able to release the sadness I held within me for those friends and family that had crossed over into spirit, as I was now able to talk to them. I also taught these skills to my wife Enny, who learned quickly and soon was talking to many on the other side. Throughout the years other friends and family have made the transition. Each time this occurs Enny and I have been able to welcome them to their new state of being as well as be part of their homecoming that occurs on the other side. We have been able to relay messages to friends and family that are still here on the earth. Through the many funerals I have attended, many have commented on how I was a source of strength for them when they had none. For me, it was not so much of an issue of having to stay strong through adversity, but more of not losing my strength through sadness and grief because I knew they were doing fine. They were there, standing in the room with everyone during their funeral, even though no one else in the room was able to perceive them. It became my task to relay messages to those that were open to hearing them. The healing that would take place during those moments was profound and instantaneous. The tears that were shed were ones of hope and happiness instead of sadness and loss.
Those moments during funerals became opportunities for teaching. For many people in the middle of their grief, Enny and I taught them basic skills whereby they could communicate on their own. We received many messages later about their own experiences connecting to the other side, and how it was deeply life changing for them. Their grief dissipated much more quickly, and the knowledge that there was life after this physical one brought a sense of peace they did not previously possess.
Spiritual Mediumship is but one tool for healing grief and loss of loved ones. Each moment in our life teaches us more about ourselves and the world around us. This includes loss of those we hold most dear. But this loss is also an opportunity to go beyond the separation that occurs upon physical death. These moments in time can create ideal circumstances for those involved to raise their own spiritual vibration to connect to those that were seemingly lost forever. Our loved ones that have already made the journey to the other side are all waiting for the opportunity to let us know they are fine, as well as give us information that can make our own path in life easier and more directed towards that which we strive to achieve. All we need to do is open our hearts and be willing to take the time to listen to what they have to say.
